The crib is where your baby will spend a lot of their time and you want to be sure they are safe. Below are some of the questions (with the answers) that are asked about crib safety. Q. Are there safety standards for baby cribs?

Yes there are some very exact standards for your baby's crib. In 1974 it was made law that cribs should no longer be painted with lead based paint. It was discovered that the ingestion of lead (from any source) could cause learning disabilities and other difficulties in young children. The slats of the crib must be no more than 2 3/8 inches apart, this is to prevent your baby from getting his body or head stuck between the bars causing injury or strangulation. The side bar should be 26 inches above the mattress when it is in its lowest position. If your child is more than an inch taller than the sidebar it is time to move him into a regular bed.

Q. Are there some hazards in my baby's crib that I need to be aware of?

Your mattress must fit snugly in the crib; an ill-fitting mattress could cause your baby to slip between the mattress and the side bar causing suffocation. The mattress height should be able to be adjusted into at least three different levels. When your baby becomes more mobile you will want to put the mattress in the lowest position to prevent your baby from climbing or falling out. The slats should be tight, loose slats could pinch little fingers. Do not put the crib near a window to prevent your baby from possibly falling out or becoming tangled in Venetian blind cords.

Q. What are some historical facts about the crib?

Here is a short chronological time line of crib facts:

1973 - The standard for crib slats was to be no more than 2 3/8th inches apart to prevent your baby from slipping through or getting their head stuck. Also, double latches for drop-down sidebars were to become the norm.

1976 - The standard for cutouts in the crib end panels are presented. The end panels must not have any decorative cutout designs. Children were getting their limbs or heads caught causing serious injury or death.

1978 - Cribs must now be painted with non-toxic finish.

1981 - Two models of cribs with cutouts are recalled.

1988 - A voluntary standard addresses mattress support hardware, failure of glued or bolted connections, drop-side latch failure and loosened teething rails.

1990 - No corner posts or projections can be more than 1/16th of an inch above the drop-side.

1998 - California and Washington mandate that hotel cribs must meet the same standards
set for full-size cribs

1998 - Portable cribs must now meet the same standards as full-sized cribs.

Q. How can I tell when my baby is ready for a regular bed?

When your child stands more than a couple of inches taller than the sidebar with the mattress in the lowest position. If your child is climbing out of the crib, for his safety put him in a regular bed.

Q. How should I put my baby to sleep in his crib?

Place your baby on his back or on his side for sleeping. Use one piece sleepers rather than blankets. Your baby could slip under the blanket and possibly suffocate. Remove all pillows and toys as well, in order to prevent suffocation.

Q. Is it safe to cover my baby with a blanket?

A blanket sleeper will keep your baby sufficiently warm while sleeping. If you absolutely need to use a blanket, tuck it in around the bottom of the mattress. Place your baby with his feet toward the end-panel and the blanket should go no higher than his/her chest.

Q. Is a mesh sided crib safe to use for my baby?

Yes, a mesh crib is safe provided the mesh is less than 1/4 inch in size, smaller than a tiny button on baby's clothes. The should be rips, tears, or loose threads. If staples are used to attach the mesh they must not be exposed and the mesh must be securely attached to the top rail and the floor plate.

Q. Can I safely use bumper pads in my baby's crib?

While bumper pads are not necessary, they can safely be used. They must be very close the edge of the mattress and properly secured. The bumpers must be flat and not puffy, as your baby could get stuck between the bumper and the mattress and suffocate.

Q. What can I do to keep my baby's crib safe?

In order to keep your baby's a safe place, you should make sure to all connections are secure and that there are no broken or missing parts. Regularly, check the teething rail for splits or cracks. Make sure the mattress spring support and your crib will withstand your baby's increasing mobility. The mattress itself should have no splits, tears, or holes.

Q. How can I tell when it's time to lower the mattress?

When your baby becomes more active, when s/he begins to pull himself to a standing position or when he sits up alone it will be time to lower the mattress to prevent your little one from either climbing out or falling out.

Q. Can I hang a mobile over my baby's crib?

Mobiles and crib gyms can be used to entertain your baby but when your child is able to get on to their hands and knees or pull themselves up. This will prevent your baby from becoming entangled in them.

These footboard brackets attach to your existing headboard-only style bed frame allowing you to attach a bolt-on footboard. Our footboard brackets only work on bed frames that have holes in the side-rails for bolting on the footboard brackets; otherwise, some drilling may be required.

Each Bed Claw footboard kit contains hardware for the size bed you have, please insure you purchase the correct size. The twin and full size kits have a 7" rail extension, while the queen or king size kits have a 13" rail extension. Dimensions Note:
Please note, these Extension Rails are 7" in length. Antique Beds Vs Modern Beds

Due to box spring queen and king sized mattresses being used for beds these days; antique beds are rarely manufactured. Many people look for standard queen and king sized bedding and sometimes even the old standard which is a full or a double sized one.

Many years ago the size of the beds did not have much importance as the average height of the beds was much shorter than what we have now. The mattresses were home-made and the beds could be of any size, including feather beds. Feather beds are now considered as luxury items and not used in day to day life.

A rugged steel plate is fitted with welded bolts at the foot-board which is done towards the inner part of it in order to hide the joints and bolts. The beds are then constructed by bolting the bolts and nuts at every corner of the beds.

These beds can be returned to their original sizes by using the original rails and all the fittings can be removed easily without any damages.

The reason people these days are converting their old bed frames to modern bedding is due to the thickness of mattresses which is too thick and many bedding stores are selling these thick and pillow top mattresses. These cover most of the beautiful heads of the antique beds and can be tall too. In case you would like to order a new mattress for your bed, it is ideal to measure the length from the steel rails to the top which is desired as per personal needs to determine the thickness of the new mattress.

Full Loft Beds

Space Saving Bunk Beds

Another range available from the Space Saving Beds Company is the Foldaway Bunk Bed which is available in two widths - either 2ft 6inches or 3ft. The frame is firmly attached to a solid wall such as breeze block, brick or concrete to ensure the occupants' safety. As a space saving option for a teen's room, these foldaway bunks are amazing: the whole bed actually folds up flat against the wall when not in use. To lower you simply undo the latch and, due to the gas mechanism, the bunk lowers slowly and safely until it locks into position in the horizontal position.

Although there is clearly still a place on the market for the traditional bunk beds, many parents have become concerned about the questionable safety of their kids using a ladder to access the top bunk and whether the rails around the top of a traditional bunk are sufficient to prevent a restless youngster from rolling out during the night. The manufacturers have taken many of the parents' concerns on board and have applied additional safety features to these traditional bunk bed models. This includes doing away with the ladder, for one thing. Many children's bunk beds now on the market incorporate integral stairways into their designs, enabling children to climb up these stairs to reach the top bunk. This is a much safer option.

The most popular bunk beds on the market are the twin over twin bunks, the full over full bunks and the twin over full bunks. Many of the twin-over-twin bunks can be used side by side as normal twin beds. A twin over full bunk bed has a single bed as the top bunk and a full-width, double bed as the lower bunk. Another popular option is the futon bunk, many of which are made along the lines of the twin-over-full bunk bed. In my own opinion, this is a lovely option for children to have the option of using the bottom bunk as a sofa during the daytime.

A far more recent innovation is the sofa that, with a few twists and turns, can be quickly turned into a set of bunk beds. In terms of being excellent space saving bunk beds, this convertible couch is great. To cut a long story short, the back of this sofa converts into the upper bunk while the sofa seat converts into the lower bunk. Brilliant though this idea is [and it is very clever], it is hoped that, eventually, the price will come down a bit - rather a lot, actually, because this is certainly not a cheap option. It's good, and full fills all the options required of space saving bunk beds, until you come to the price. The last time I looked, this little number retailed at a cool ,800.00!
